Bruce Willis plays “David Dunn,” a man who is facing relationship issues with his family and discovers at the same time that he has a few very powerful and extraordinary powers. Willis plays the part with a quiet and reclusive nature that reflects an average everyday guy wile at the same time making, it believable that he could be a super hero. Trapped between two worlds, the subtlety of his actions makes everything real to life. Just take a look at the scene in which Willis’ son tries to shoot him. While other actors would act straight out panicked, he approaches it in a whole different way that stays true to his character and shows an amazing skill.

Samuel L. Jackson plays “Mr. Glass” a man born with a genetic disorder in which his bones can break at a slight touch. He is an obsessed and surprisingly strong individual whose sole purpose is to find the opposite of himself, someone who can’t break. We all know that a character who is obsessed to such an extent can come off comedic if played by a lesser actor. Fortunately, we have Jackson who brings absolute intelligence and passion to his character that otherwise might come off corny and unrealistic.

We can’t walk away without taking about the visuals. Now, as you start watching this film you find out quickly and easily that this film is a comic book. Not necessarily the ones that your kids have, but the ones you had when you were little. They looked like real to life sketches drawn out in incredible story lines. This is what “Unbreakable” is. From the grayish blues to the startling red, real life becomes a comic book. The scene with Willis and the rescue during the kidnapping will be your prime example. It’s amazing how much like a comic book it looks. In this scene even the rain looks drawn.

The writing is, of course, unsurpassed. M. Night always pulls out the stops in his writing. I never fail to be amazed by his plot turns and the precision he uses in executing them. I am one of those who guess plotlines easily, but M. Night almost always surprised. This movie was no exception. I won’t tell you what happens in this one, but you will just have to find out for yourself.

I have loved all M. Night’s movies (yes, even “Lady In The Water”), but “Unbreakable” holds a certain special place in my mind. I think of it often and to me that is a mark of a good filmmaker. He makes you hear what he is saying and you apply it. Alls I have to say is give this movie a chance. Tune out what everyone has said before and make your own decision. You might just be amazed.

The acting was fine, and the story was okay, too. But, surely for just the shock value, the continual explicit sexual punch lines left this movie trite and quite common place.

This movie could have been a lot better if they would have worked on the plot more – but, even with that said – I did watch the entire movie. So it does have some redeeming value to it, though not much.

Maybe I’m just a little too jaded to enjoy romantic movies anymore. I’m probably the guy, at any rate, who had given up on dating and relationships. Wait a minute, I AM the guy. As much as this movie tries, in a really awkward way, to claim there is that “one” person out there for everyone or that relationships do work, it left me bored about half way through, wanting something different. When in Rome, I thought, had much more plot, even though it was not at all original. The Ugly Truth is, actually, not ugly – its just unoriginal.

I would not recommend this movie, even though it was well filmed and has talented acting in it. It’s just way too typical, looking for cheap laughs, simply because the writing isn’t able to carry it over. Run. Run.

On Sunday, December 7, 1941, the Japanese navy conducted a surprise military strike on the US Naval base at Pearl Harbor. The attack consisted of two aerial attack waves totaling 353 aircraft, which were launched from six Japanese aircraft carriers.

Japan’s attack was meant to neutralize the U.S. Pacific Fleet and protect Japan’s intended advancement into Malaya and the Dutch East Indies to secure oil, rubber, and other natural resources during WWII.

The attack sank four U.S. Navy battleships, and damaged four more. The Japanese also destroyed three cruisers, three destroyers, one minelayer, and 188 aircraft. They killed 2,402 Americans and wounded 1,282 more.

Japan’s losses were minimal, consisting of 29 lost aircraft, five lost midget submarines, and 65 killed or wounded servicemen.

The attack pushed U.S. public opinion from years of isolationism to the acceptance of Roosevelt’s declaration of war. American President Roosevelt called it “a date which will live in infamy.”

In honor of that day, Historybusters would like to recommend the following film:

Tora! Tora! Tora! is an amazingly accurate joint American/Japanese production that tells both sides of the conflict. Filmed half in English and half in Japanese with subtitles, it starts a bit slow, but has a great pay off during the award winning battle sequences. All the events actually happened. All the characters are based on real people, and a number of the survivors from both sides served as technical advisors for the film. So forget the recent film Pearl Harbor, which is basically a love story based on fictions characters, and sit down to watch Tora! Tora! Tora! with your kids instead. They will thank you when they get to history class. The film is PG.

The actual documentary in itself was fun just in the fact that there are interviews from people who had been alive when Disney was. Anybody who worked for Disney when he was alive can say that he held a special magic for the company and those people are the ones who know what Disneyland is all about. While there is magic in the parks today it was nothing like when Walt roamed the streets. The documentary goes from the time the park was created to now and shares some interesting stories (I love the one about the cleaning crew in Haunted Mansion). Probably the best part about the documentary is the great clips you never see anymore (like the opening of Star Tours with Michel Eisner and George Lucas). It does have some interesting facts (I didn’t know that for a year there was a ride that was a cross between a train and a monorail). While the documentary was entertaining, it was not necessarily the most informative part of the DVD.

What I learned the most from was the special features. I would have to say that without the special features the documentary would not be worth the money spent. A trivia game is offered on the DVD in which you can answer questions about the park. Your reward is that you get to pick a clip to watch (I really enjoyed my tour of Walt Disney’s apartment above the fire station). It also features “People and Places: Disneyland U.S.A.” You can watch it in its original format or with a commentary. I highly recommend watching it with the commentary. This movie was actually one of the first films (short films, of course) that was shot in cinemascope, so it is absolutely amazing to watch. The most amazing part is to see that Frontierland was one-third of the park back then. It really shows us how our focus on media has changed. Back then it was all about Westerns and being out in nature….things sure have changed. We are definitely more about the fast-paced lifestyle.

“Operation Disneyland” is one of the most amazing parts. It was a short film that was sent only to the ABC affiliates shortly after the Disneyland opening day was aired. It is a documentary on the filming of it. No one thinks about how heavy the cameras were back then, or of how little rehearsal time they had (the park was still being fine tuned an hour before it opened). They had to pull their trucks out of the cement and had to allow construction trucks through. I could really feel the frustration…in the comfort of my own living room.

The DVD also includes a few “Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” episodes. Again we get to learn about how TV was different back then and how our attention span has changed. Now-a-days we have to edit the material to where it is switching off every two seconds, but back then it was like nothing audiences had ever seen. So, the segments take a little longer and are richer. The “Golden Horseshoe Revue” episode was one of the most entertaining. What a funny show! You know something can translate when it is about fifty years later and someone can still laugh like that. Nothing can entertain you more than old vaudeville material. “Disneyland Goes to the World Fair” is a great look into the process of making Primal World, It’s a Small World, and Carousel of Progress. It also shows the history of where fairs come from, which was shown in an entertaining, but informative light. Last (but not least), there was “Disneyland Through the Seasons.” The least entertaining of the episodes on this DVD, it shows the openings of some of the rides, parades, and the candlelight processional. It is worth a small browse over.

All in all I am happy for purchasing this DVD. It is worth it just for the “Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” episodes. It brings you back to a time when things were a little more innocent and Disneyland was just a dream that no one believed in (except for one man, of course). It is less a vacation video and more a homage to dreams everywhere, we can never dream to big…..after all Disneyland all started with a mouse.

Mel Gibson’s got a new movie out, called The Edge of Darkness. He plays a Boston police detective and is visited by his daughter who is shot on his front porch after she gets mysteriously sick and needs to go to the doctor.

To be honest, this movie made me yawn a few times. I went back and forth, trying to figure out if it was supposed to be a serious movie or some sort of joke. The fight scenes (the few offered) were quite comic bookish and the filming seemed strange. The problem, though, is the story just drug on and on.

I have always liked Mel Gibson movies. He is a legend with movies like Lethal Weapon 1, 2, 3, 4 and great films like Braveheart and The Passion. There is a reason why he is very popular around the world. But this newest movie just seemed to lack that realistic element most of his movies have, not to mention the usual pounding action that we’ve all come to love.

The Edge of Darkness, although filmed in 2010 and set during the same time, seems old and antiquated. Most of the time I thought I was watching some 1980′s cop movie, instead of one more relevant.

With a terrible plot, terrible filming and even worse ending, I’m glad I didn’t pay money to see this film. I feel robbed, just losing the two hours it took to struggle through it. You might consider foregoing this flick and maybe read a book or something.

New Moon, the sequel to Twilight is going to be filmed, starting early March. The movie scenes will include many locations, thus will not be all filmed in the one area. The cast has been confirmed, and the film will be directed by new guy, Chris Weitz. The New Moon movie will be an interesting movie to see when it comes out, as there are high expectations by the huge twilight fan base, and being pressed for time, can the Twilight Saga live up to its name?

To give variety to the audience, the New Moon Movie will be filmed in a mixture of locations. Los Angeles, California, USA is on the list, most likely a lot of work to be done in the studios however they may decide to film outside to capture city scenarios. Portland, Oregon, USA was used back when Twilight was filmed, containing stunning scenery, it should reveal some exciting scenes. A new contender being film location Rome, Lazio, Italy is set to be used in the movie. Adding a foreign location to the mix will surely create an in-depth movie. Last but not least, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is going to be another filming location.

All of the cast are going to be kept busy filming in all these different locations, but I am sure they will be able to deliver a magnificent production, along with the new director Chris Wietz who will be able to fill the hearts of the ever so eager Twilight Saga fans.
